Type of Project Climate Change Research and Implementation
Duration:   March 2003-March 2005
Status:   Complete
Partner Organizations:   CARE Bangladesh, CIDA and BCAS
Key words: Vulnerability, Food Security, Adaptation Strategy, Climate Change, Awareness Raising, Livelihood Options
Main Objective:   • To contribute to the Canadian Climate Change Development Fund Adaptation Programme by increasing the capacity of Bangladeshi communities living in the south-west region to adapt to adverse effects of climate change. • Reduce vulnerability by increasing household level income, food security and capacity building through diversification of livelihood options. • To reduce vulnerability of community and households to climate change impacts such as floods, droughts and water logging in Gopalganj district of Bangladesh
Brief Description: The project identified and selected 600 vulnerable households as direct beneficiaries from six villages - Maksudpur, Kashiani, and Kotalipara Upazilas under Gopalganj district. The households included farmers, fishers, day laborers and female headed households. Household census and baseline survey were carried out. Workshops, training, demonstration and cross visits were organized as methods to implementing the project. Trainings were conducted to enhance understanding of adaptive strategies to climate change.
Output • The vulnerable and poor were empowered through knowledge on rights, equity, justice issues, advocacy, awareness raising and community organization. • Research Institutions were linked with the project partners and target beneficiaries in order to disseminate research findings pertinent to reducing their vulnerability to climate change. • Several training modules were developed. • Six hundred vulnerable households in Gopalganj district demonstrated enhanced capacity to innovate their livelihood strategies towards reducing vulnerability to climate change.
